The Saengerbund Awards are given each year to young singers who have demonstrated the potential for a professional performing career. All entries are evaluated by professional casting directors, coaches, and conductors from opera companies around the US and in Germany. The quality of the video submissions is of high importance in the process, and the singer's German diction is a major component of the evaluation. Creative selections are appreciated, and they do help the applicants stand out from the preliminary pool of entries. German operetta is a particularly good source for young singers. Canto returns to Northern Virginia with a summer program devoted to every aspect of operatic performance, musical style, interpretation, language, diction, and stagecraft. Emerging artists train with distinguished faculty from the Juilliard School, the Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, and Les Maîtres Sonneurs. Renowned soprano Elizabeth Futral and a faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory joins us as special guest artist. Singers engage in intensive role study and professional video recording, while the second edition of the Canto Festival offers multiple performance opportunities at the Dreamscapes Performing Arts Center in Sterling, VA.
