Now in our 4th season, the Greve Opera Academy is a collaboration between CT Lyric Opera, the CT Virtuosi and the town of Greve in Chianti (Florence). The Schmidt Vocal Institute (SVI) nurtures and mentors the development of talented, young singers from 15-18 years old. The curriculum focuses on training singers to have a healthy technique, improved musicianship, and outstanding performance skills. Singers study with the Miami University voice faculty as well as the 2018 guest faculty, including Nathan and Julie Gunn, Sylvia McNair, and Brian Zeger. In a special partnership with Cincinnati Opera, singers see a performance of La Traviata and attend a master class with a Cincinnati Opera Principal Artist. Located 45 minutes west of Florence, the city where opera was born, Lucca offers a small town experience with easy access to Italy's major cultural center. Over the last twenty years, the LLC has grown from a small contest exclusively for students of the Eastman School of Music to one of the widest-reaching international vocal competitions. Singer/actors ages 19-32 from all over the world will compete for top prizes of $20,000, $15,000, and $10,000. Additional awards range from $500 to $5,000, including the Kurt Weill Award of $5,000 for an outstanding performance of two contrasting selections by Kurt Weill.
