The Jensen Foundation supports America’s most promising young opera professionals with its annual Vocal Competition. Singers compete for their share of $41,500 in awards, including a $15,000 First Place award. The competition takes place at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in New York City May 21-26. The singing environment is well-organized and supportive with professional accompanists and preliminary judges. Now in our 4th season, the Greve Opera Academy is a collaboration between CT Lyric Opera, the CT Virtuosi and the town of Greve in Chianti (Florence). The Academy provides young singers the opportunity to learn from world-class faculty and perform leading roles in fully staged operas with professional orchestra. We focus on providing artistic excellence combined with practical professional experience. The 2018 Academy will feature productions of Aida and Le Nozze di Figaro as well as other concerts throughout Tuscany including Florence, San Gimignano, Greve and elsewhere. In the first 3 seasons, attendees have come from the US, Italy, Canada, China, among others, and many have gone on to perform with CLO in the US in main-stage productions.

Study Italian opera and language in Lucca, Puccini's beautiful hometown in Tuscany. Opera Lucca offers immersion in operatic and conversational Italian. Singers and pianists will prepare arias and scenes for performances, coached by world-class faculty who are either native Italians or experts in the language. The Schmidt Vocal Institute (SVI) nurtures and mentors the development of talented, young singers from 15-18 years old. The curriculum focuses on training singers to have a healthy technique, improved musicianship, and outstanding performance skills. Singers study with the Miami University voice faculty as well as the 2018 guest faculty, including Nathan and Julie Gunn, Sylvia McNair, and Brian Zeger. In a special partnership with Cincinnati Opera, singers see a performance of La Traviata and attend a master class with a Cincinnati Opera Principal Artist. With courses in lyric diction, acting, Alexander Technique, historical performances, and vocal health, the course culminates with two public performances on campus in Oxford, OH.
Canta in Italia "Sing in Italy" Experience Tuscany Now entering its 14th summer of study abroad, Canta in Italia offer singers the unforgettable experience of living and studying in the beautiful Tuscan city of Lucca. Located 45 minutes west of Florence, the city where opera was born, Lucca offers a small town experience with easy access to Italy's major cultural center. Puccini, Boccherini and Catalani were all born in Lucca, known throughout Italy as "the musical city". From June 4 through June 30, students are immersed in Italian language and culture, and stimulated by an intensive course of vocal study and performance.
