Audition Method

If you wish to audition by recording, please see audition requirements. Video recordings and recent youtube links are accepted. EARLY submissions are highly recommended.

Audition Requirements/Selections

Studio Artist Singers: Prepare three art songs in two different languages (aria is optional for Studio Artist program). Applicants are encouraged to include a song in English as part of their selections. Optional: you may prepare a fourth selection that highlights a special interest: (musical theater, oratorio, new music, Bach etc.)

Young Artist & Professional Singers: Prepare three art songs in three different languages and an aria. Applicants are encouraged to include a song in English as part of their selections. Optional: you may prepare a fifth selection that highlights a special interest: (musical theater, oratorio, new music, aria etc.)

Pianists: Prepare four selections – two art songs in contrasting style and two other works of your choice - arias or additional songs; one of these may be a solo work. Minimum number of selections permitted: 3. Maximum number of selections permitted: 5

NEW! Inaugural year for two Special Prizes (optional)

2024 marks the inaugural year for 2 special prizes devoted to promoting unique and innovative programming for the Song Recital. Applicants who wish to apply for either the Art Song XXI Prize or the American Song Prize may apply as an individual or a pre-formed duo. Applicants must have their application and draft of their program submitted in FULL to be considered for these prizes, and must indicate on the application that they wish to be considered. Awardees must agree that, if selected, they will take part in the complete SongFest program. Duos/individuals can be considered for both prizes if they have successfully completed all required aspects of each application, but no performer will be awarded more than one prize. Winners of the special prizes will receive a full tuition scholarship and will be considered for further scholarship covering all or a portion of their housing and meals.Each duo will receive a cash prize and be featured in a recital at SongFest 2024. You do not need to prepare any of the repertoire for the audition for your proposed recital. Please visit www.songfest.us for all details.

The Art Song prize will offer 4 young artists (2 singers and 2 pianists) the possibility of working closely, coaching, planning and editing a program with pianist and scholar Graham Johnson curated by Mr.Johnson himself from his archive of Songmakers' Almanac recitals. In addition to a $1,000 cash prize per duo, each singer and pianist will receive private coaching and suggestions for the program with Mr. Johnson.Those who wish to be considered for the prize must submit a draft of their program and a descritpion of the event along with their SongFest Application (uploaded below), understanding that the inventiveness of the program, description of their event, and quality of their application materials will be considered when awarding the prize. Recitation, projections, and any other enhancements are welcome. They will perform a complete half of a public recital at SongFest. Awardees of the ‘Songmakers XXI’ prize will be selected by SongFest’s artistic leadership from the list of invited participants. Please visit the SongFest website for complete rules. The American Song Prize will offer 4 young artists (2 singers and 2 pianists) the opportunity to grow their programming skills and performance experience by creating an innovative and engaging half recital program of contemporary American art song. A $1,000 cash prize per duo will be awarded, and they will receive private coaching by our distinguished faculty, who specialize in contemporary music. Those who wish to be considered for the prize must submit a draft of their program and a description of the event along with their SongFest Application (uploaded below), understanding that the inventiveness of the program, description of their event, and quality of their application materials will be considered when awarding the prize. Recitation, projections, and any other enhancements are welcome. Awardees of this prize will be selected by SongFest’s artistic leadership. Please visit the SongFest website for complete rules and reference materials when creating your program and description. All singers and pianists who wish to be considered for this prize must check this box and upload both a draft of your 40-minute recital program and a description of your event including any special use of projections, lighting, recitation, etc. Maximum number of selections permitted: 2
