Tier One Tier One is for singers ready to embark on a professional career. This includes those who have recently completed undergraduate or graduate study in voice; however, this is not a requirement. Tier One is open to anyone who has studied voice extensively and developed substantial skill in vocal performance.

Tier Two Tier Two is for those studying singing at or near the college level. Singers who are engaged in serious study (private or collegiate) of the fundamentals of vocal performance should apply at this level. Competitors might be undergraduates or graduates studying music, vocal performance, or musical theater. Non-collegiate singers who have achieved comparable vocal development through private study are eligible.

Information on Competition Tiers: The competition will offer prizes to two groups of singers. Rather than specific age or educational requirements, these groups are distinguished primarily by level of ability, vocal experience, and readiness to begin a professional career. In some cases, singers may qualify and apply for both groups. There is no upper or lower age limit for this competition, provided the singer meets the general requirements of either tier. Participation does not require a degree. The competition is open to applicants irrespective of residency. Each applicant is strongly encouraged to select the tier that best represents their current status as a vocalist; however, if more than one seems applicable, the applicant may apply in both tiers. If an applicant chooses to apply in both tiers, an application fee of $40 will apply for each tier ($80 total) if applying by December 20, 2019, or $50 for each tier ($100 total) thereafter until February 14, 2020.

Video Submissions*

All applicants must upload two individual video clips via YouTube to their YAP Tracker application. Each selection must be sung from memory and accompanied by a pianist. The pianist must be visible in the video and the pianist's name included in the description. The two videos must be uploaded separately, and the two in total must not be longer than 15 minutes. Do NOT send videos of entire operas or concerts. Videos should be recent and no older than 18 months. Each video clip must be unedited and without recording enhancements. Each selection should be recorded in one "take." Vocal selections may be chosen from lyric theater (opera, operetta, musical theater), oratorio, symphonic vocal material, art songs, or traditional jazz and cabaret standards. Those hoping to pursue a career in a classical music genre should ideally include a sample in more than one language. Video selections that do not meet these criteria must first be approved for submission by JTVA. Any questions about these video submission requirements may be sent to jamestolandvocalarts@gmail.com. (Note: In the event you are selected as a finalist, you may be required to submit the same videos directly to JTVA for use in promotions and fundraising. You will be provided detailed information and assistance on how to do this upon notification of finalist status.) Number of selections required: 2.

Statement of Understanding*

By selecting this checkbox, I certify that all of the above information is true and correct. I agree to abide by the rules and decisions of James Toland Vocal Arts, Inc. (JTVA) and its judges for the competition. If I do not adhere to the rules and regulations of the competition I may be disqualified, there will be no recourse in being reconsidered, and no refund of the application fee shall be made. I understand that the competition and associated activities may be photographed or recorded, either by audio and/or audiovisual. JTVA shall have sole ownership of any such photographs and recordings and shall have the right to use such materials for non-commercial purposes or to use the materials for publicity purposes without compensation to me. Competition winners shall agree to acknowledge their 2020 JTVA Vocal Competition awards in any program, biography, or news release for three years from the date of the competition. Competition winners shall also agree to use reasonable efforts to participate, on request by JTVA, in fundraising or other public events at mutually convenient times and locations for 18 months from the date of the competition.
