Letter of Recommendation

Please provide a letter of recommendation from your current teacher or a known musician with whom you have collaborated recently. Ensembles

The Steans Music Institute accepts applications from chamber groups with three or more members. The following section is only required for applicants applying as a member of a chamber ensemble. We require a full application from each ensemble member, but only the primary contact person needs to submit recordings and pay the application fee. If you are not the primary contact person, please email steansmusicinstitute@ravinia.org so that we can allow you to submit your application without paying the fee.
Piano Trio, String Quartet, etc.
If so, please complete the rest of the application, including the audio recordings and the application fee. If not, please email steansmusicinstitute@ravinia.org so that we can accept your application without recordings or the fee.

Audio Recordings

All applicants must upload three electronic audio recordings to fulfill the requirements described below. Be sure to offer selections of contrasting character. All recordings must be uploaded here; CDs, tapes, and video recordings will not be accepted, nor will recordings sent by email. Live auditions are not offered. Unaccompanied recordings will not be accepted unless the piece was written to be unaccompanied. Chamber music will not be accepted except where specified below. Concertos and other works with orchestra will not be accepted except where specified below.

Violinists
1. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Classical era. Contrasting movements from a concerto by Mozart or Beethoven, preferably performed with orchestra, will be acceptable. 2. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Romantic era. No concertos will be accepted for this requirement. 3. A piece of your choice. You may use a movement from a chamber work only if you are playing first violin.
Violists
1. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Classical or Baroque era or a suitable substitute. Concertos by Stamitz, Telemann, or Hoffmeister will be accepted. 2. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Romantic era. 3. A piece of your choice.
Cellists
1. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Classical era. Movements from a Haydn concerto will be accepted. 2. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Romantic era. 3. A piece of your choice.
Pianists
1. Two contrasting movements from a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert. Two contrasting movements from a concerto by Mozart or Beethoven will be an acceptable substitute only if accompanied by full orchestra. 2. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Romantic era. 3. A piece of your choice. This may be a movement from a chamber work or a sonata with another instrument.
Ensembles
Ensembles need only submit one application and pay one application fee for the group.
1. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Classical era. 2. Two contrasting movements from a work from the Romantic era, preferably by Schubert, Schumann, or Brahms. 3. A piece of your choice.

Payment Details

Credit card payment is preferred, but checks payable to Ravinia Festival will also be accepted. Checks must be received by the application deadline, January 25, 2013. Checks should be mailed to:

(Note to applicants from outside the United States: the application fee must be in U.S. dollars in the form of an international money order, a bank check drawn on a U.S. bank, or cash. Ravinia must receive the full $80. All bank fees should be paid before the check is issued.
